Well I love the ride and handling characteristics of a Mustang II suspension so even though the original suspension was complete I pulled it all out.
I found only one company that makes a Mustang II suspension specifically for the Jeepsters and that's Fatman Fabrication . I didn't go with Fatman's Unit because: 1. I've installed that unit on different customers vehicles and had problems with customers bending the frame due to lack of lateral support from the cross member to the side of the frame. The quick fix is to make up some angle plates to weld between the cross member and the side of the frame but because of the Jeepsters thin frame I didn't think that fix would last to long. 2. Fatman's cross member mainly welding to the bottom of the frame and that wouldn't be a wise choice. 3. Fatman's cross member doesn't allow you the flexibility to
tailor you ride height before you weld the cross member. I need that adjustability
for what I have planned when I take ownership of the Jeepster!
1. Adjustibility in setting up the built in ride height before I weld it in. 2. Supports the frame on three sides and with the top hat welded on basically all the way around. 3. Excellent instructions and photos. 4. The added inside cross member to frame metal provided the perfect location to weld the V-8 mounts.
Why Heidt's isn't for the faint of heart: It's called the Multi fit for a reason and that is because it will fit several different vehicles of different widths and heights. There are NO PRE CUT ANGLES in the cross member to locate it within the frame. You have to read and follow the several pages of instructions to properly set the cross member at the axle centerline and then cut and notch the top hats to locate the upper a-arms and anti dive angle. You therefore have the ability to determine the final riding height of you vehicle during installation and then don't have to worry about dropped spindles or cutting coils to obtain the desired height. It's a lot of work but you get one of the best suspensions on the market with a beautiful ride when your done.
Installation Time: I want to say that it took me 4 good solid days to remove the original suspension, make all the required cuts and weld in the Heidt's cross member. To say the Jeepster's frame are thin would be an understatement!
